Information for First Time Visitors
How do I navigate the DEP Air Program web page?
The information on our web page covers a wide range of topics, from descriptions of different air pollutants and explanations of global climate change to listings of permitted sources and indexes of our published material. To help find what you are looking for, the material is organized into six broad categories:
About Air,
Emission Sources,
Air Quality Monitoring,
Rules and Forms,
Publications, and
About Us.
To navigate to a specific category, click on the category name on the navigation bar. For example, click on the blue area surrounding the words "Air Quality Monitoring" to navigate to that category. Once you select a specific category, you will see a sub-menu with several sub-categories listed. Each category has a default main page, titled "The Basics," which describes the type of information you can find on each of the sub-category pages.
For example, clicking on "Rules and Forms" will bring up the Rules and Forms main page, "The Basics." This page informs you where to go to find regulatory forms, rule development projects, guidance material, and information about state and federal laws.
If you ever get lost, click on "Air Home" in the upper-left corner of the screen to bring up the default main page. The Air Home page describes each of the six broad categories, and is a good place to begin searching for general information.
What if I'm looking for very specific information?
Educators and students may be interested in a special hub
page that we have created. Clicking on "Information for educators and students" will take you to a collection
of links that we think may be of interest to students
looking for information for reports or to educators looking
for reference material.
In addition, we have created a hub page that links to some
of the more frequently accessed technical information on our
web page. Clicking "Information for air quality
professionals" will pull up a collection of links to the
most commonly requested forms, rules, publications, and
software.
What if I don't know where to start?
If this is your
first time visiting our web page, you may not be sure where
to start. You may want to begin by visiting one of the
following pages.
Compliance
The Department coordinates the statewide air compliance and enforcement
activities. The Air Compliance Assurance (ACA) Section promotes air
compliance through the department's district offices and the approved
local program offices.
Permitting
The Department of Environmental Protection is responsible for
air permits regulating major and minor facilities based on
emissions. Operating Permits are issued by the department's
office in Tallahassee as well as the six district offices.
Monitoring
An essential part of managing Florida's air quality is the
identification of areas where plans are needed to reduce
pollutant concentration levels to achieve the standards and
areas where standards are already being met but plans are needed
to ensure continued maintenance of acceptable levels of air
quality in the face of anticipated population or industrial
growth. The first step in this process is the analysis of the
ambient air monitoring data.
Small Business Environmental Assistance Program
The Small Business Environmental Assistance Program (SBEAP) is
an integral part of the Bureau of Air Monitoring (BAM).
Although SBEAP is primarily
air-focused, staff either provide direct assistance
on air, water, and waste questions or refer them to
other Florida Department of Environmental Protection
divisions.
Mobile Sources
Mobile source emissions, or emissions from motor vehicles and
non-road engines, account for almost a third of the air
pollution in the United States. Routine aging and deterioration
of vehicles, poor state of tune, and emission system tampering
all increase emissions.
These emissions, primarily hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides,
contribute to the formation of ground level ozone, a noxious
pollutant considered this country's most pressing urban air
quality problem.
