Sediment Survey
In partnership with the Gulf Archeology Research Institute, aquatic preserve
staff are conducting a sediment survey with funding provided by the Southwest
Florida Water Management District’s Surface Water Improvement and Management
Program. This survey attempts to determine if historical alterations to the
Rainbow system and the changing water chemistry of the springs have resulted
in changes in the water clarity or the flora and fauna of the Aquatic Preserve.
Sediment cores are being collected from the head spring to the confluence of the
Withlacoochee River. The study is creating a historical depositional record to
determine the source or origin of the sediment deposits. The results of this
project will help guide management strategies designed to maintain and improve
the integrity of the native vegetation and water clarity throughout the river.
