Educational Outreach
The Florida Geological Survey maintains an
active Education and Outreach Program in keeping
with
its mission to interpret and disseminate geologic data and
encourage responsible use, understanding, and conservation of
Florida’s natural resources. Florida’s geology is unique; topics
that may be explored from this portal provide an exciting
introduction to our fascinating and fragile natural heritage.
Videos available to teachers make the sometimes weird and often
wonderful world of Florida geology easily accessible to
students. In addition, the FGS hosts an annual Open House in
celebration of Earth Science Week that features tours of our
facility and interactive earth science activities for students
from ages K-12. Home schooling parents and their children are
our special guests at this event. The FGS also sends geologists
to speak to local schools on a staff available basis.
Educational Outreach Events:
- Earth Science Week 2008 -Florida’s Governor
Charlie Crist has proclaimed October 12-18 Earth Science
Week in Florida.View Govenor

This year, in keeping with the national theme for the event,
“No Child Left Inside”, we will be offering geologist-guided
walks of the Leon Sinks Geological Area. Interested folks
will meet at the kiosk near the restrooms at 9:30 am or 2:30
pm on Oct. 13th. More details will follow but we suggest
that participants bring insect repellent, sunscreen and
water. In case of rain or a storm event we will reschedule
the walks for a later date and send out a notice by e-mail.

their geology badge. That event is filled for 2008.
- Earth Science Week 2005 - Earth Science
Week is a national event sponsored and initiated by the
American Geological Institute to raise public awareness of
the earth sciences and their role in our daily lives. The
theme for this year’s event was “Geoscientists Explore our
Earth”.

the Gunter Building, on the campus of Florida State
University (view
map of the location). The Open House will run from 10:00
am to 3:00 pm. Earth Science Week is organized each year by
the American Geological Institute to focus on the science
that explains the various earth processes that affect all of
us. The theme for this year’s event is “Be a Citizen
Scientist!”.
We will be joined this year in our celebration by the
United States Geological Survey which has its Florida
headquarters in Tallahassee, the Department of Environmental
Protection’s Office of Environmental Education, and a
representative from Florida Lake Watch. The local home
schooling community will be our special guests. Interactive
activities appropriate for various age groups are planned.
The general public is also invited.
We also plan special activities to assist Webelos Scouts
