Earth Day @ the Capitol 2006: Water is Life

Earth Day is marked by celebrations around the world aimed at increasing public awareness of our wondrous and fragile environment. The first official Earth Day was held in 1970 with the mission of uniting the world toward a common cause of environmental protection and conservation. On April 19 the Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Environmental Education celebrated Earth Day in the Capitol Courtyard from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM. The theme for this year’s event was: “Water is Life”.

Displays were presented by entities of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, other state governmental agencies and private ventures with concerns for the environment. The Florida Geological Survey brought its mobile GEOLAB and presented an activity for students designed to acquaint them with various rock types that make up aquifer systems in Florida. In keeping with this year’s theme, the Florida Geological Survey distributed posters related to geology and spring protection issues.
