Whereas, the earth sciences enable us to keep a vigilant eye on Florida, monitoring changes and providing data and interpretation for environmental protection and stewardship; and
Whereas, the earth sciences are integral to finding,
developing, and conserving mineral, energy and water resources needed
for Florida's continuing prosperity;
Whereas, the earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, coastal erosion, landslides, droughts, expansive soils and sinkhloes; and
Whereas, the earth sciences are crucial to environmental and ecological issues ranging from water resource assessments and conservation to air quality and waste disposal; and
Whereas, the earth sciences provide the basis of earth systems understanding as the foundation of environmental
management principles; and
Whereas, geological understanding of natural resources, hazards, and the environment are vital to land management and land use decisions in Florida; and
Whereas, the earth sciences provide critical pieces to our understanding of historical and pre-historical Florida; and
Whereas, the earth sciences provide support for the bold and innovative Springs initiative funded by the Florida Legislature to insure the legacy of Florida springs;
Now, therefore, I, Jeb Bush, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing Earth Science Week, October 12-18, 2003
