  • Scout Night at the Florida Geological Survey

  • The Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Geological Survey is pleased to announce Scout Night, an evening event designed to assist Webelos Scouts in earning their geology badge. Scout Night will be held Wednesday, October 17th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Gunter Building on the campus of Florida State University. A map to the Gunter Building may be found on our website at: http://www.dep.state.fl.us/geology/aboutthefgs/fgsmap.htm Note that the name of Palmetto Drive has been changed to Academic Way and Antarctic Circle has been changed to Antarctic Way. Because of the size of our facility, the number of scouts we can accommodate at this event is limited. We are currently at capacity for this event; however, you may be placed on a waiting list if you wish. For information and reservations please contact Paulette Bond by phone (850.488.4191) or by e-mail at: Paulette.Bond@dep.state.fl.us

Scouts along with their leaders and parents are divided into three groups that rotate through a series of three activities. One activity consists of an examination of samples from a starter rock collection supplied to each scout by the Florida Geological Survey along with a discussion of their uses. We also discuss geologic materials used in metals, glass, jewelry, road building products, fertilizer, and home building materials. A second activity involves producing a drawing that shows the cause of a volcano and also a discussion of mountain formation. The third activity is a guided tour of our facility.

Please go to http://www.dep.state.fl.us/geology/events/earth_sci_week_2007.htm for parking information for the event.

  • Short Course: Karst Hydrogeology in Florida

The DEP/FGS are participating in this year’s Hydrogeology Consortium’s short course and field trip focusing on ground water flow and interaction with surface waters in karstic watersheds - December 5-6, 2006, from 8:00am until 5:00pm. The combination lecture/ field trip will use the Woodville Karst Plain (WKP) as a representative watershed/springshed for demonstrating the dynamic of ground water flow and possible contamination of ground water and springs in such settings. The WKP and Wakulla Spring system have been the sites for extensive research activities by the Florida Geological Survey, the USGS and FSU for several years. These research projects, and the data obtained so far, will illustrate not only the complexity of water flow and resource degradation in such settings but also what can be done to limit degradation by providing the regulatory community with the scientific tools to use in conserving and protecting these natural systems.

Scientists, engineers, resource managers and regulatory field personnel will benefit from participating in this event that was heavily attended last year. Please contact Dr. Rodney DeHan at Rodney.DeHan@dep.state.fl.us or at (850) 488-9380, for any questions about registration and other logistics.
