Blackwater Heritage State Trail
Blackwater Heritage State Trail, formerly Whiting Naval Railway, was donated to the
State of Florida by the U.S. Department of Interior, National Park Service, Lands to Parks
Program in 1993. The State began acquiring the land in 1990, and has thus far acquired 96 acres.
The trail is approximately 8.5 miles long, with the first 7 miles of the trail on the original
bed of the historic Florida and Alabama Railroad. The original railroad was owned and operated
by the Bagdad Lumber and Land Company.
The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is still in its early phases of construction.
An off-road horse trail is planned to run along side the paved trail and eventually visitors
will be able to reach the Blackwater River State Park and the Blackwater River State Forest.
