In order to be considered for a position with the Division of Law Enforcement, you must:
- Be at least 19 years old
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Have a high school diploma or GED and one of the following:
- 30 semester/45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university
- two years active duty military experience
- two years public contact experience
- Have a valid Florida Driver's License; no more than three moving traffic violations within the last three years; no DUI convictions
- Not have been convicted of any felony; not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement
- Not have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States
- Have good moral character
Medical Requirements
- Must pass a thorough medical examination including an 8-panel drug screen by a physician designated by the Division of Law Enforcement
Hearing Requirements
- Not worse than average hearing loss of 25 decibels (ANSI) at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz
- Single reading of 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz
- Single reading of 35 decibels at 500 Hertz, and
- Single reading of 45 decibels at 4000 Hertz
Vision Requirements
- Unaided vision shall not be worse than 20/200 and corrected to 20/20 in one eye and not worse than 20/40 in the other eye
- All candidates must pass a depth perception test
Physical Ability Requirements
- Must pass a physical ability test which assesses strength, muscular endurance, agility, flexibility, reaction time and aerobic capacity.

Other requirements
- Applicants will be waived for preferred candidates if such applicant has:
- used cannabis or cannabis derivatives more than 15 times
- used cannabis or cannabis derivatives in the past 3 years
- illegally used, experimented with, sold, or transported any controlled substance in violation of Chapter 893, F. S.
- failed to register for the Selective Service, if applicable
- intentionally omitted, misrepresented, or falsely stated any information, in writing or orally, to the DEP during the application process
- convicted of domestic violence or terminated for an act of violence
- received more than 5 moving violation citations during driving history
- poor credit history
