Florida Launches Record Disaster Response Aid to Mississippi
~ Florida resources now aiding local response efforts following Hurricane Katrina’s second landfall ~
TALLAHASSEE- The State of Florida has deployed
personnel, equipment and commodities to Mississippi to
aid response and recovery from the devastating impact of
Hurricane Katrina. In the hours and days after the
catastrophic storm, Governor Jeb pledged the support of
Florida to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. Resources
from Florida were mobilized through the Emergency
Management Assistance Compact, a national organization
that provides a structure to interstate mutual aid and
allows impacted states to request and receive assistance
from other member states quickly and efficiently. These
efforts represent Florida’s largest state-to-state
assistance in history.
“Our prayers are with the residents of Mississippi,
Louisiana and Alabama who are coping with the impacts of
Hurricane Katrina,” said Governor Jeb Bush. “Florida
received help from 35 states during the 2004 hurricane
season, and we are committed to doing everything
possible to help our neighbors during this very
difficult and sad time.”
Florida’s State Emergency Response Team is supporting
local officials and federal responders with search and
rescue missions and emergency management operations in
Mississippi. Members of Florida’s extensive team of
emergency response vessel crews, search and rescue
teams, National Guardsmen and emergency management
officials will continue to deploy as needed to support
operations in the impacted area.
“In preparation for Katrina’s first landfall in
Florida, we readied first responders and essentials
supplies across the state,” said Florida Division of
Emergency Management Director Craig Fugate. “These
resources are in Mississippi or en route as part of
Florida’s largest ever emergency response. More help is
on the way as Florida supports critical life-safety
missions in Mississippi.”
