Covering twenty counties, the Northeast District encompasses the largest land mass of any department regulatory district and includes portions of the Atlantic coastal plain together with counties bordering the Gulf of Mexico and State of Georgia. The natural and ecological value of the Northeast is reflected in its diversity, the district has more rivers than any other including the St. Johns, Nassau, Tolomato and historic Suwannee and Santa Fe Rivers.

Using Technology to Protect the Environment

The Department is continuously looking for innovative ways to protect, conserve and manage Florida's natural resources and enforce the State's environmental laws.

New technology is always becoming available and utilized to protect the environment. In the late 1990’s Continuous Emission Monitors and a data reporting system that would continually report real time data of emissions and production rates to the Department’s Northeast District Office was installed at the Suwannee American Cement Plant, located near Branford Florida.

This technology allowed the Department to quickly identify problems in real time. The result is that the problems were identified and corrected quickly. For the past four years the facility has been in compliance with State and Federal Requirements.

We also have an Air Quality web site available that maps and reports ozone and particle pollution levels recorded by the state’s ambient air monitoring network.
