In May 2013, two Northwest
District employees, Chad Nowling and Mike Stephen, came
upon the wreckage from a head-on collision while in the
area following up on a complaint. As first on the scene,
they and another motorist began working to free the
people from the mangled and smoking cars fearing the
cars might catch on fire. They were able to break the
window and remove two children from one of the cars
before the paramedics arrived, and were requested to
continue to help free one of the drivers while the
paramedics focused their attention on the most
critically injured person. Both drivers were listed in
critical condition while both children were released
from the hospital later that day. Fortunately, everyone
in the accident was wearing a seatbelt.
