SHALIMAR YACHT BASIN EARNS CLEAN MARINA DESIGNATION

-DEP recognizes marina for its environmental commitment -
Shalimar Yacht Basin Clean Marina Designation

PENSACOLA - The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) together with the Clean Boating Partnership today recognized Shalimar Yacht Basin as the State’s 96th Clean Marina.  The yacht basin became the first facility in Okaloosa County to achieve a Clean Marina certification.

“The Clean Marina designation is a testament to the commitment of this facility to meet the highest standard of environmental protection,” said DEP Northwest District Director Richard Fancher.  “Clean Marinas set an example for the marine industry. Their continued improvements and protection of our waterways benefit the local economy, the community and our marine resources.”

Constructed in the early 1950’s as one of the first marinas on the Gulf Coast, the Shalimar Yacht Basin is a 5-acre full service marina and boatyard located on Choctawhatchee Bay, offering 130 wet slips and 160 dry storage units. The present owners have created a marina with a staff trained in marine environmental issues and best management practices focused on pollution prevention. The facility has vegetative buffers to enhance stormwater pollution prevention and offers four sewage pumpout services to avoid unwanted discharges to Florida’s waters. Shalimar’s website offers environmental policies to their customers through an online newsletter.

“Clean boaters are vital to the Partnership’s goal of protecting marine resources while ensuring continued enjoyment of Florida's waters,” said Allison Underwood, Chair of the Clean Boating Partnership.“By seeking out clean marinas and clean boatyards, clean boaters can apply ‘pier pressure’ on behalf of our environment.”

The Pollution Prevention Program offers a unique approach to environmental management. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 supports the reduction of pollution through cost-effective alternatives for governments, industries and individuals through a "multi-media approach" that applies pollution prevention measures to water, air, and land. This concept includes the following voluntary activities: recycling, waste minimization and source reduction:

  • Onsite recycling involves the reuse of materials that are the source of pollution. Process chemicals are reused directly in the process or are revived in some manner and reused in either the original process or some other process within the facility.

  • Waste minimization involves the conservation of materials that are the source of pollution. This is accomplished when releases of chemicals to the environment are reduced.

  • Source reduction involves eliminating the source of pollution. It is accomplished when chemicals or processes that produce pollution are eliminated with chemicals or processes that cause less pollution.
