The Pollution Prevention Program offers a unique
approach to environmental management. The Pollution
Prevention Act of 1990 supports the reduction of
pollution through cost-effective alternatives for
governments, industries and individuals through a
"multi-media approach" that applies pollution
prevention measures to water, air, and land. This
concept includes the following voluntary activities:
recycling, waste minimization and source reduction:
-
Onsite recycling involves the reuse of materials
that are the source of pollution. Process chemicals
are reused directly in the process or are revived in
some manner and reused in either the original
process or some other process within the facility.
-
Waste minimization involves the conservation of
materials that are the source of pollution. This is
accomplished when releases of chemicals to the
environment are reduced.
-
Source reduction involves eliminating the source of
pollution. It is accomplished when chemicals or
processes that produce pollution are eliminated with
chemicals or processes that cause less pollution.
