Florida DEP To Re-Permit GEL Landfill

--Controversial Orange City facility to get OK to continue operations –

ORLANDO – Today, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) notified GEL Landfill of its intent to renew GEL’s permit to operate a construction and demolition debris landfill. This intent comes in response to GEL’s timely application and demonstrated ability to meet the requirements of Florida’s environmental regulations.

Controversy has surrounded GEL in recent years as residential development has sprung up close to the landfill.

"We brought the City and GEL together in hopes of a resolution that would serve both parties," said Vivian Garfein, DEP Central District Director. "Regrettably, they couldn’t agree. Now, the clock has run down and we must take action on the application."

DEP’s action opens a legal point-of-entry into the permitting process for those who would be substantially affected by the issuance of a permit.
