Alafia River State Park Bike Trail Goes To
Extreme
--Rated among Florida’s best mountain bike
trails--
TALLAHASSEE – The local chapter of the International
Mountain Bike Association recently recognized the soon-to-be
completed mountain bike trail in the Alafia River State Park as
one of Florida’s best extreme trails, adding "with 6,800
plus acres, it could become the largest trail system in the
state." IMBA’s mission is to promote mountain bicycling
opportunities that are environmentally sound and socially
responsible.
Park staff, volunteers and Swamp Bike Club members are building
the 20-mile network of off-road biking trails, now 80 percent
completed, which are scheduled to open in November. The bike
trails will range from easy riding through flood plains in
surrounding counties to an extreme 3-mile loop with hills even the
most experienced mountain biker will find exhilarating.
In addition to bike trails, the park offers 20 miles of
equestrian trails and 20 miles of hiking trails to make up the
60-mile trail system – those already completed. A 30-site
equestrian/family camping area, paved roads and a support facility
are underway and are scheduled for a mid-November opening.
The Alafia River cuts through the south prong of the state park’s
property offering canoeing and kayaking to park visitors, giving
them additional opportunities to experience the "Real
Florida."
