GOVERNOR
PROCLAIMS OCTOBER AS
FLORIDA
GREENWAYS AND TRAILS MONTH
TALLAHASSEE – On
September 3, 2001, Governor Jeb Bush signed a proclamation declaring October
as Florida Greenways and Trails Month.
Greenways and trails help to protect Florida’s natural resources,
preserve historical and cultural sites, showcase working landscapes, connect
communities, provide recreational opportunities and fuel the economy.
The
Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Greenways &
Trails is promoting activities throughout the state.
Government agencies, as well as public and private organizations, are
hosting events to draw people outside and on the trails during October.
The goal is to hold at least one event in every county; more than 100
events are already scheduled.
“Florida
has thousands of miles of trails winding through both urban and rural
areas,” said Jena Brooks, Office of Greenways & Trails director.
“Celebrating them will focus attention on their many benefits,
encourage partnerships that will extend and enhance our statewide system,
and involve residents in creating and using greenways and trails.”
