Floridians And Visitors Benefit From $50,000 Award
-- Enhancements to Sand Hill Trail planned --
MALABAR -- The Department of Environmental Protection’s
Office of Greenways & Trails today awarded $50,000 to the Town of
Malabar to further the development of the Sand Hill Trail. On behalf of the
state, Lindsey Benedict, regional planner for the Office of Greenways &
Trails, presented the check to Mayor Phillip R. Crews at the ceremony in
Malabar, where the trailhead is located.
"We are very pleased to be able to work with local
communities to enhance recreational opportunities for residents and
visitors. Through local funding efforts such as this, we are helping to
connect Florida’s communities by building a statewide system of greenways
and trails," said Jena Brooks, director of Greenways & Trails.
The funding will provide signage, picnic tables, bike
racks and a pavilion at the trailhead. Local volunteers have already made
many improvements by removing exotic plans and cleaning up the site. The
trail volunteers in Malabar will play a key role in implementing this
funding.
The Sand Hill Trail is a vital part of a connected system
of greenways and trails that will extend through Brevard County, continue
south from the trailhead along the town right-of-way through Glatter, and
connect to the Valkaria Scrub Preserve and the Sebastian Refugia. To the
north the trail will connect with the planned trails system for the City of
Palm Bay.
