DEP Division Of Law Enforcement Submits Terrorism
Preparedness Report
TALLAHASSEE – Thomas S. Tramel, III, Director of
the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Law Enforcement,
recently submitted DEP’s Terrorism Preparedness Report to the
Executive Office of the Governor and DEP Secretary David B. Struhs. The
Director was asked to prepare this report as a result of the terrorist
incidents that occurred on September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington,
D.C.
Secretary Struhs took the proactive step of establishing
an Environmental Terrorism Response Team, led by Tramel, to conduct criminal
investigations when hazardous materials and conventional chemicals are
involved. The response team provides service including, but not limited to:
crime scene security, environmental assessments, criminal evidence
collection, criminal investigations, and site clean-up within designated
"hot zones" requiring specialized capability.
The 8-page report is divided into four sections:
- Terrorism Response
- Unique Capabilities
- Authorities, Responsibilities, and Expertise
- Environmental Terrorism Response Team (ERT)
"The DEP’s roles and responsibilities are key in
the protection of some of Florida’s most vital, yet vulnerable
resources," said Tramel.
The DEP Division of Law Enforcement has dedicated its
efforts to enhancing its response capabilities to potential criminal and
terrorist events. To learn more about DEP’s response capabilities or to
