DEP "Clean Marina" Designee Wins Environmental Award

TALLAHASSEE —The Pensacola Shipyard Marine Complex (PSMC) was among the winners honored by the Council for Sustainable Florida for outstanding contributions to Florida’s long-term sustainability through coastal conservation efforts. Winners were announced Monday night at a Tallahassee awards ceremony.

The Pensacola Shipyard Marine Complex was recently designated as a "Clean Marina" and "Clean Boatyard" by Florida’s Clean Marina Program after successfully establishing and voluntarily implementing best management practices that conserve and protect Florida’s waterways. Developed in partnership by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Marine Industries Association, the Florida Sea Grant Program, and the United States Coast Guard, the Clean Marina Program recognizes marinas and boatyards that improve operations to prevent pollution, conserve resources and ensure a sustainable future.

"By joining the Clean Marina Program this facility has embraced a common-sense approach to sustainable business practices," said DEP Secretary David B. Struhs. "Along with ‘Clean Marina’ designation, the Council for Sustainable Florida award recognizes the commitment of the Pensacola Shipyard Marine Complex to clean water, the boating public and the marine industry."

To obtain "Clean Marina" designation, PSMC trained its maintenance boatyard staff and independent contractors in solid waste management, hazardous waste disposal and emergency response spill procedures. Today, more boat owners bring their vessels to PSMC because of its sound management practices and environmental commitment.

The Council for Sustainable Florida recognized 17 businesses, organizations and individuals from across the state for their successful efforts to manage, protect and restore Florida’s coastal areas. Winners received resolutions from Governor Bush and the Cabinet in a ceremony at the Capitol in Tallahassee today.
