Gainesville After-School Program Receives Technology Boost

-- Computer equipment donation for Front Porch Florida community --

Collage of Secretary Struhs at the Gainesville After-School ProgramGAINESVILLE – A Gainesville after-school program serving over 40 children received a welcome boost to information technology needs today. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) made the first in a large delivery of computer equipment to the Northeast Gainesville Duval Area Front Porch Florida Community.

DEP Secretary David B. Struhs presented the Gardenia Gardens Neighborhood Network Program with the agency donation of hardware for use in computer training for area children, adults and seniors.

"DEP’s support of after-school programs is just one way for state agencies to partner with communities like Duval Heights," commented DEP Secretary Struhs. "DEP is looking for ways to help Front Porch communities make a difference by reaching their environmental and educational goals."

Created through an initiative led by Governor Jeb Bush to help revitalize urban areas, the Northeast Gainesville Duval Area Front Porch Florida Community is one of 16 Front Porch communities. With this designation, DEP and 19 other state agencies are assisting the neighborhood with community-developed goals for economic development, job training, youth education, neighborhood security, recreation, flood mitigation and area beautification.

"When the DEP heard that we needed computers for an after-school computer training center they offered to lend a hand," said Front Porch community liaison Juanita Miles-Hamilton. "This equipment will help to enhance the technological skills of community residents."
