City of Tallahassee Earns Environmental Stewardship Award

TALLAHASSEE - Today, the Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) Division of Waste Management presented an award to the City of Tallahassee for Exemplary Performance in Environmental Stewardship. The award, under DEP's Partnership for Ecosystem Protection (PEP) Program, recognizes pollution prevention accomplishments during calendar year 2001.

The City of Tallahassee was honored for voluntarily reducing emissions by updating equipment and producing energy from water rather than fuel, and installing solar panels to power an electric vehicle recharging area and city facilities. The City also offers many energy saving programs to its residents, including low cost loans for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning upgrades, free home energy audits, as well as a solid waste recycling program.

PEP is an incentives-based recognition program overseen by the Department to enhance DEP's ability to encourage, promote and reward facilities in Florida through appropriate recognition of their commitment to pollution prevention. Companies that become PEP partners must be in com-pliance with all air, water, and waste regulations, have a good environmental compliance history and implement pollution prevention activities above and beyond regulatory requirements.
