DEP Settles Domestic Wastewater Violations with Hillsborough County

TAMPA - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced today that it has reached a settlement agreement with Hillsborough County that resolves the County’s failure to properly sample and analyze wastewater residuals, and for the release of wastewater residuals that did not meet pathogen reduction requirements.

In April of 2002, the County reported that the residuals generated and ultimately land applied by Hillsborough County's South County Wastewater Treatment facility, did not meet the required pathogen reduction requirements. In May 2002, the Department discovered that the facility was also not satisfactorily managing its laboratory activities with regard to monitoring the residuals for pathogens. The corrective actions required to bring the facility into compliance have since been performed.

In addition to the corrective actions, the County has also been assessed civil penalties and costs in the amount of $14,950.00.
