DEP Recognizes Budget Auto Parts as Green
Yard
-Automotive recycler goes green-
AUBURNDALE - The Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) today raised the flag and certified Budget Auto
Parts as the State’s sixth Green Yard. Budget joined
the growing corps of Green Yards in Central Florida by
completing an industry program that protects Florida’s natural
resources.
"Green Yards is getting environmental results and
protecting our natural resources,” said DEP Deputy Secretary
for Regulatory Programs Allan Bedwell. “By using common sense
solutions to environmental challenges, Budget Auto Parts
demonstrates a commitment to Florida’s environment and serves
as a model to the entire auto recycling industry.”
Budget Auto Parts, located in Auburndale, Florida, is owned
and operated by Brad Rutherford, a third generation auto
recycler. The nine-acre facility recycles nearly 800 automobiles
each year.
“We are proud to operate as a Green Yard and
sincerely thank DEP for working with us to achieve this
designation,” said Brad Rutherford. "All automotive
recyclers in Florida can, and should, operate in a manner that
is safe for the environment”.
In an industry known for environmental challenges, the Green
Yards pilot program helps automotive recyclers understand
and comply with environmental regulations. After attending an
educational workshop, facility operators are required to submit
a series of six modules documenting compliance. Fifty-five
Central Florida auto recyclers signed up for the Green Yards program
last year. Of those, 35 have completed all compliance modules.
“The Green Yards program benefits both business and
the environment,” said DEP Central District Director Vivian
Garfein. “By completing the Green Yards program, Budget
Auto Parts has proven it’s a leader within their industry and
community.”
Automotive recyclers that achieve Green Yards designation
demonstrate environmental compliance with over 35 best
management practices that prevent pollution ranging from proper
container labeling to managing stormwater.
