Statement By: Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M. Castille Regarding the Federal Response to the U.S. Ocean Commission’s Final Report on Ocean Policy

TALLAHASSEE – “I applaud President Bush’s commitment to protect and enhance the nation’s oceans. Recommendations within the U.S. Ocean Action Plan support Florida’s efforts to improve coastal management, safeguard marine habitat and protect the vitality of our ocean-based economy.

“Expanding environmental protection beyond our shorelines is good policy. Florida is already taking steps to strengthen cooperation between the federal government, neighboring states and local organizations and provide greater environmental benefits for the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and our coral reefs.

“Our progress over the last five years, together with the President’s plan and renewed partnerships, creates a solid foundation for future success. I applaud the fine work of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, and look forward to working with our federal partners to protect the health of our nation’s waters.”
