Florida Celebrates America Recycles Day

--Statewide activities recognize eight years of environmental awareness--

TALLAHASSEE – In recognition of the 8th Annual America Recycles Day (ARD), the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is encouraging Floridians to join celebrations across the state highlighting ways to conserve natural resources, strengthen local economies and create American jobs by making a commitment to recycling and purchasing recycled products. America Recycles Day, November 15th, is part of a month long effort to promote environmental stewardship and awareness.

Northwest Florida

Saturday, November 6, 2 hours before the FSU Homecoming Game, Tallahassee
Green Tailgate Event at Homecoming
FSU's Environmental Law Society will have pledge forms available for citizens to make a commitment to recycling over the next year. Each pledge is an opportunity to win a 2004 Ford Hybrid SUV.

Monday, November 15, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Tallahassee
America Recycles Day at the Capitol

Representatives from the State, county and city will show their support and commitment to recycling at the annual Capitol event. Exhibitors will be on site to educate the public on the numerous ways to recycle in the Tallahassee area.

Northeast Florida

Saturday, November 6, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Gainesville
Celebrate America Recycles Day at Imagination Station

The City of Gainesville Solid Waste Division will celebrate America Recycles Day with games, entertainment, a free moon walk and informational exhibits at the Downtown Festival and Art Show.

Thursday, November 18, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., Jacksonville
ARD at the Teachers Supply Depot

The City of Jacksonville and Duval County Public Schools are teaming up to host an America Recycles Day Fair for Duval County Public School Teachers. On display will be information about recycling and related environmental issues from the City of Jacksonville, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Jacksonville Electric Authority and several local non-profit agencies dedicated to fostering sustainability in Jacksonville.

Central Florida

Monday, November 15, 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m., Winter Park
Rollins College America Recycles Day Event
Rollins College Recycling Department is planning a carnival with prizes, give-aways, raffles and games. Win a Rollins Recycles Tote bag, frisbees and other fun prizes! Recycling pledge cards will be drawn for a chance to win a Ford Escape hybrid SUV and other prizes including a $100 Publix gift certificate!

Recycled Sculpture Contest
Keep the Indian River Beautiful
4th Annual Recycled Sculpture Contest in recognition of America Recycles Day is sponsored by Treasure Coast Refuse, Waste Management, Indian River Mall, Indian River County Solid Waste Department and the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners.

Southwest Florida

Saturday, November 13, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Lake Wales
Special Collection Event and Recycled Sculpture Contest

Old tires, ink cartridges, rechargeable batteries, cell phones and athletic shoes will be collected for recycling at the mall parking lot. A recycled sculpture art contest will be held and winning entries will be on display inside the mall from November 6th to the 13th.
