Florida AmeriCorps Team Lends a Helping Hand
--6 Days 6 Ramps builds ramps for disabled
neighbors--
TALLAHASSEE –
Disabled citizens in Leon County are receiving a helping hand through 6 Days
6 Ramps, a county-wide effort to build six wheelchair ramps for low income
residents in Leon County. Organized in part by the Florida State Parks’
AmeriCorps program, local volunteers will become part of the Ability1st and
United Way volunteer groups, dedicating their time to improving the lives of
Floridians.
“The initiative provides an opportunity to reach out to our neighbors while
recruiting volunteers for future projects opening the doors of the community to
disabled members,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen
M. Castille. “By preserving and strengthening Florida’s state parks and
revitalizing communities, the AmeriCorps program serves as a model for
volunteerism and environmental stewardship.”
With completion scheduled for November 20th, 6 Days 6 Ramps is
designed to give Florida residents greater access to their homes and
communities. Building ramps for little or no cost to the resident increases
mobility, reduces isolation and offers opportunities for self-care.
Launched in 1997, Florida State Parks AmeriCorps is part of a larger national
AmeriCorps service movement that engages more than 50,000 citizens of all ages
and backgrounds each year in results-driven community service. In return,
AmeriCorps members learn leadership and life skills and earn education awards
that help pay for school or repay student loans.
The Florida State Parks AmeriCorps program is administered by the Department
of Environmental Protection and operates in Florida's 158 state parks and their
surrounding communities. In cooperation with park staff, local organizations and
schools, Florida AmeriCorps members provide service in natural resource
management, environmental education, partnership development and volunteer
recruitment.
