Florida Greenways and Trails Director Honored at National Symposium

--Jena Brooks honored for leadership and advocacy for Florida’s trails--

Greenways & TrailsAUSTIN, TX - Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Greenways and Trails Director Jena Brooks today received Florida’s Trail Advocacy Award at the annual National Trails Symposium held in Austin, Texas. Supporting the efforts of statewide trails systems, this award honors individuals who successfully promote trail planning, environmental protection and the development and maintenance of trails through public policy.

“Florida has one of the best greenways and trails systems in the nation,” said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “Thanks to the hard work of people like Jena, of the Greenways and Trails staff and hundreds of volunteers across the state, we are conserving natural Florida and providing miles of recreational opportunities for our communities.”

Appointed in 2001 as the DEP Director of Greenways and Trails, Brooks serves as a

strong advocate and champion for Florida’s greenways and trails. Under her leadership, DEP has forged partnerships with other government agencies, non-profit organizations and private companies to expand Florida’s network of trails.

“The success of a statewide trail system relies on support from both public and private partners,” said Brooks. “Every piece of land added to Florida's greenways and trails provides more open space for our families to enjoy.”

The Department of Environmental Protection manages eight State Trails, in addition to the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, including five rail-trails and the recently opened Withlacoochee Bay Trail-- located on the west end of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway in Citrus County.

Over four thousand miles of trails cross Florida’s diverse landscape through rural and urban areas. Over the last five years, the State added nearly 450 miles of trails to the Greenways and Trails system. Through Florida Forever, the State’s premier land acquisition program, $4.5 million is invested annually to purchase land for future trail areas and build and maintain Florida’s trails network.

Encouraging Floridians and visitors to head outdoors with family and friends, Governor Jeb Bush declared October Florida Greenways and Trails Month. Greenways and trails provide recreational opportunities, protect Florida’s natural resources, preserve historical and cultural sites and connect communities.
