TALLAHASSEE – Florida Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) Secretary Colleen M. Castille has
announced the appointment of Kimberly Shugar as DEP’s
Ecosystems Projects Director. Ms. Shugar began her new
position on November 7, 2005.
“Kim’s education and experience will bring knowledge
and insight to the agency and Everglades restoration,”
said DEP Secretary Castille. “Her expertise on the
Everglades and environment of South Florida will
strengthen our efforts to protect the State’s natural
resources.”
Ms. Shugar served as Program Administrator in the
DEP’s Southeast District, where she coordinated efforts
for the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, Total Maximum Daily
Loads program and Watershed Management Plans. She has
held several positions within the DEP, working as an
environmental consultant and environmental specialist
before her current position. Ms. Shugar has been with
the DEP since 1998.
Ms. Shugar received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology
from Mercer University and a Master’s Degree from the
University of Florida. Recently, she completed business
courses at Florida Atlantic University.
“This position provides a new opportunity to protect
and restore Florida’s famed River of Grass, and I look
forward to the challenges that await me.” Shugar said.
Under the leadership of Governor Bush, Florida forged
a 50-50 state-federal partnership to implement the
30-year, $8 billion Comprehensive Everglades Restoration
Plan and has committed more that $2.5 billion through
the end of the decade to clean up and restore America’s
Everglades. DEP is the lead state agency on Everglades
restoration.
