DEP Appoints Kimberly Shugar as Ecosystem Projects Director

--Shugar has seven years of environmental experience with the State—

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary Colleen M. Castille has announced the appointment of Kimberly Shugar as DEP’s Ecosystems Projects Director. Ms. Shugar began her new position on November 7, 2005.

“Kim’s education and experience will bring knowledge and insight to the agency and Everglades restoration,” said DEP Secretary Castille. “Her expertise on the Everglades and environment of South Florida will strengthen our efforts to protect the State’s natural resources.”

Ms. Shugar served as Program Administrator in the DEP’s Southeast District, where she coordinated efforts for the Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, Total Maximum Daily Loads program and Watershed Management Plans. She has held several positions within the DEP, working as an environmental consultant and environmental specialist before her current position. Ms. Shugar has been with the DEP since 1998.

Ms. Shugar received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Mercer University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Florida. Recently, she completed business courses at Florida Atlantic University.

“This position provides a new opportunity to protect and restore Florida’s famed River of Grass, and I look forward to the challenges that await me.” Shugar said.

Under the leadership of Governor Bush, Florida forged a 50-50 state-federal partnership to implement the 30-year, $8 billion Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and has committed more that $2.5 billion through the end of the decade to clean up and restore America’s Everglades. DEP is the lead state agency on Everglades restoration.
