TALLAHASSEE –The Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) is using electronic field
authorizations to streamline the permitting process for
residents of South Florida. The pilot program will
accelerate emergency field permitting in those areas hit
hardest by Hurricane Wilma.
“Using this technology allows DEP staff to provide
field authorizations within minutes at a resident’s
property,” said DEP’s South District Director Jon
Iglehart. “By reducing stress on residents and reducing
the process for a permit, Floridians can focus on
getting their lives and property back in order.”
DEP staff will assist homeowners and businesses with
storm-damaged or destroyed docks, seawalls and other
water dependent structures, providing field
authorization for repairs on-site. Field authorizations
can be issued to repair or replace impacted structures,
alter storm-damaged mangroves and approve the placement
of necessary shoreline stabilization.
The Department’s teams will use handheld equipment
showing aerial maps that detail the existing structures
prior to the storm. With this information, the teams can
immediately review and finalize the rebuilding
authorization, print it out in the field and provide the
owner with a copy.
