JACKSONVILLE – The Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Clean
Boating Partnership, recognized Huckins Yacht
Corporation Marina and Boatyard of Jacksonville as
Florida’s 108th Clean Marina and 21st Clean Boatyard
today.
“Clean water is vital to Florida’s environment and
economy, Clean Marinas and Clean Boatyards lead the way
in protecting this natural resource,” said DEP Northeast
District Director Greg Strong. “By earning these
designations Huckins Yacht Corporation has proven its
stewardship and commitment to Florida’s waterways.”
To receive Clean Marina and Clean Boatyard
designations, Huckins Yacht Corporation went beyond
required environmental regulations and adopted
safeguards to keep pollutants out of the Ortega River,
where the marina has resided for more than 75 years. By
implementing new procedures to manage and dispose of
wastewater and other materials, the marina and boatyard
are ensuring future generations will enjoy the river.
“DEP and the Clean Boating Partnership are proud to
recognize marinas for being designated as a Clean Marina
and Clean Boatyard,” said DEP Division of Law
Enforcement Assistant Director Maury Kolchakian.
“Huckins Yacht Corporation is setting an important
example for the community by protecting Florida’s
beautiful natural resources.”
The Clean Boating Partnership, which includes the
DEP, Marine Industries Association of Florida, Florida
Sea Grant Program, United States Coast Guard and Coast
Guard Auxiliary, developed the Clean Marina Program to
help marinas, boatyards and boaters protect Florida’s
waterways using simple environmental practices that
prevent pollution.
“Clean boaters are vital to the partnership’s goal of
protecting marine resources while ensuring continued
enjoyment of Florida's waters,” said Chair of the Clean
Boating Partnership Allison Underwood. “By seeking out
clean marinas and clean boatyards, clean boaters can
apply ‘pier pressure’ on behalf of our environment.”
The Clean Marina program encourages marinas,
boatyards, marine retailers and boaters throughout
Florida to adopt eco-friendly practices beyond
regulation requirements. By educating boaters and
improving operations at marine facilities, Florida’s
Clean Marinas and Clean Boatyards are helping to ensure
a sustainable future for the environment, boaters and
billion-dollar marine industry.
