The Tradewinds Island Grand Resort Receives Florida Green Lodging Certification

--Environmentally-friendly hotel conserves resources, saves money and attracts customers--

ST. PETE BEACH – The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today welcomed the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort to the Florida Green Lodging Program. The voluntary state initiative provides the lodging industry with technical assistance, encouraging hotels and motels to adopt cost-saving ‘green’ practices that reduce waste and conserve natural resources.

Green Lodges are leaders in their industry,” said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “Their environmental commitment serves as an example and a challenge to other hotels to adopt innovative green practices, conserve resources and save money.”

The TradeWinds Island Grand Resort uses water efficient bathroom amenities as well as towel and linen reuse programs to conserve water. The lodging facility also conserves energy through energy efficient appliances and improves indoor air quality with air conditioner maintenance and efficient air filters. The resort purchases products with post-consumer content and recycles paper, cardboard and aluminum. The TradeWinds Island Grand Resort is also a participant in Water CHAMPs, a water conservation initiative through the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Launched in March 2004, the Florida Green Lodging Certification Program establishes environmental guidelines for hotels and motels to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution. As reward for designation, Florida is recommending Green Lodges to companies and trade organizations seeking environmentally-conscious lodging and convention facilities. With the addition of The TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, the program has 15 hotels certified, with 12 in the process of becoming certified.
