TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) is partnering with Energy
Technology Laboratories (ETL) to help Florida’s lodging
industry conserve both energy and water across the
state. The partnership is the latest component of DEP’s
Green Lodging initiative, which encourages hotels and
motels to adopt cost-saving ‘green’ practices that
conserve energy, reduce water consumption, protect air
quality and reduce waste.
“Energy Technology Laboratories is using cutting edge
technology to help protect Florida’s environment,” said
DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “The products and
technical assistance ETL provides is another resource to
encourage the lodging industry to implement innovative
green practices.”
Through a public-private partnership, ETL will
provide Florida’s lodging industry with discounts and
technical assistance on environmentally-friendly
products and services such as its Oxygenics®
water-saving showerhead. The showerhead can help a 320
room hotel conserve close to three million gallons of
water annually.
Launched in March 2004, the Florida Green Lodging
Program establishes environmental guidelines for hotels
and motels to conserve natural resources and prevent
pollution. As an incentive for designation, Florida is
recommending Green Lodges to companies and trade
organizations seeking environmentally-conscious lodging
and convention facilities.
