PALM BEACH - The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP) today welcomed The Breakers Palm Beach
to the Florida Green Lodging Program. The voluntary
state initiative provides the lodging industry with technical
assistance, encouraging hotels and motels to adopt cost-saving
‘green’ practices that reduce waste and conserve natural
resources.
“By participating in the Florida Green Lodging
Program, the Breakers Palm Beach Hotel is raising industry
standards,” said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “In
addition, its dedication is conserving Florida’s natural
resources for residents and visitors alike.”
The Breakers Palm Beach Hotel is reducing water consumption
by not only installing low-flow and automatic faucets and
toilets, but also through the use of a deep well, reverse
osmosis system, which saves 104 million gallons of potable
water annually. In addition, the hotel is conserving energy
through the use of energy efficient appliances, and indoor
air quality is improved through proper air conditioner maintenance.
Furthermore, the hotel is complimenting their energy conservation
practices by recycling and purchasing paper products with
post-consumer recycled content.
Launched in March 2004, the Florida Green Lodging
Program establishes environmental guidelines for hotels
and motels to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution.
As reward for designation, Florida is recommending Green
Lodges to companies and trade organizations seeking environmentally-conscious
lodging and convention facilities. With the addition of
the Breakers Palm Beach, the program has 17 hotels certified,
with 14 in the process of becoming certified.
