CAPE HAZE – The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating
Partnership, today recognized MarineMax Cape Haze as the
first Clean Retailer in Florida and first Clean Boatyard
in Charlotte County.
“Marine Max is providing a service to the boaters,
Florida residents and the environment by implementing
‘green’ practices,” said DEP South District Director Jon
Iglehart. "Florida’s marine resources are a significant
part of the state’s economy, and protecting the
environment helps protect Florida’s sustainable future.”
MarineMax, achieved its new Clean Retailer and
Clean
Boatyard designations by developing and implementing
management plans to decrease stormwater run-off and
debris. The facility also offers boat cleaning, engine
maintenance and emergency procedures that help preserve
the state’s marine resources.
“As the Clean Boating Partnership’s first Clean
Retailer, MarineMax is taking the initiative to protect
Florida’s environment,” said DEP Division of Law
Enforcement Assistant Director Maury Kolchakian. “By
protecting Florida’s waterways today, the marina is
ensuring pristine natural resources for future
generations.”
With more than one million registered motorized vessels
in Florida, environmental education within marine
industries is the first step towards safeguarding the
state’s natural resources. In response, the Clean
Boating Partnership developed the Clean Marina,
Clean
Boatyard, Clean Retailer and Clean Boater Programs to
protect Florida’s waterways.
“At MarineMax, we take our environmental stewardship
responsibilities quite seriously,” says William H.
McGill, Jr., Chairman and CEO of MarineMax. “We work
hard to deliver the boating dream to our customers, and
a large part of living the boating dream is enjoying the
beautiful waters throughout our country and beyond. By
taking steps to minimize the environmental impact of
boating, we hope everyone will be able to enjoy clean
water and beaches for years to come.”
The Clean Boating Partnership includes the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection, Marine
Industries Association of Florida, Florida Sea Grant
Program, United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard
Auxiliary. By providing ‘green’ education and
alternatives, the Clean Boating Partnership helps ensure
a sustainable future for the environment and the
billion-dollar marine industry.
“Hats off to our fellow partner, Marine Max National
Safety Director Susan Kingston, and the facility’s
environmental accomplishments,” stated Clean Boating
Partnership Co-Chair Stephen Bogner. “MarineMax's
dedication to clean water is to be commended and we
welcome Cape Haze to our growing family.”
