TALLAHASSEE – The U. S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) today recognized Dr. Philip N. Kane as a
top award winner during their 2006 National Clean Water
Act Awards Program in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Kane, the
Residuals Coordinator for the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Central District
office, was presented with an award for developing a
guide book for teachers titled Residuals, Biosolids,
Sludge: What’s in a Name?.
“I am pleased that EPA recognized Dr. Kane for his
outstanding work both within DEP and in the field of
residuals,” said DEP Secretary Colleen M. Castille. “By
sharing his knowledge through the creation of the guide
book, Dr. Kane is increasing public awareness of the
environmental process of using biosolids in Florida.”
Dr. Kane received the award for first place in the
Biosolids Awards Program category for Public Acceptance
Activities. The guide book includes several
skills-training courses to expose middle school students
to ‘real-life’ simulations such as environmental rule
making, town meetings and explorations of the beneficial
use of biosolids as a fertilizer.
“We’re extremely proud of Dr. Kane’s accomplishment,
and his expert work in the biosolids field,” said Vivian
Garfein, Director of the DEP’s Central District. “This
award is well deserved.”
Dr. Kane has been with DEP’s Central District since
1987, and has been the District’s residuals coordinator
since 1990. In May of this year, Dr. Kane received the
DEP’s Special Achievement Award for his work on the
academic guide book. A native of Maine, Dr. Kane
completed his undergraduate and doctorate studies at the
University of Maine in Orono, Maine.
“We based our selection on Dr. Kane’s unique,
innovative, and multidisciplinary educator’s guide for
teaching students about biosolid issues,” said Benjamin
Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for the EPA. “We
congratulate Dr. Kane on his commitment to excellence in
biosolids management.”
