ST. PETERSBURG – The Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the
Clean Boating Partnership, today recognized Maximo
Marina as Pinellas County’s 14th Clean Marina.
“With more than 2,000 marinas in Florida, these
facilities play an important role in the protection of
our waterways and marine resources,” said Deborah
Getzoff, Director of DEP’s Southwest District Office.
“Maximo Marina has taken the initiative to preserve the
state’s natural resources and lead the boating industry
by example.”
To receive the Clean Marina designation,
Maximo Marina met the Marina Environmental Measures
established by the Clean Boating Partnership. In
addition, the marina implemented a self-inspection
process to continuously evaluate aspects of the marina
including stormwater, waste management, emergency
preparedness as well as fire safety.
“DEP and the Clean Boating Partnership are
pleased to designate Maximo Marina as a Clean Marina,”
said DEP Division of Law Enforcement Assistant Director
Maury Kolchakian. “Maximo can be proud of its hard work
toward keeping Florida's waterways clean and for the
example of environmental stewardship they set for
facilities around the state.”
With more than one million registered motorized
vessels in Florida, environmental education within
marine industries is the first step towards safeguarding
the state’s natural resources. In response, the Clean
Boating Partnership developed the Clean Marina,
Clean Boatyard, Clean Retailer and
Clean Boater Programs to protect Florida’s
waterways.
“The Clean Boating Partnership is proud to
recognize our newest Clean Marina, Maximo
Marina,” said Clean Boating Partnership Co-chair
Brad St. Coeur. “Maximo Marina's commitment to Florida's
environment is to be commended and we thank the facility
for its dedication."
The Clean Boating Partnership includes the Florida
Department of Environmental Protection, marina and
boatyard owners and operators, Marine Industries
Association of Florida, Florida Sea Grant Program, and
the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary.
By providing ‘green’ education and alternatives, the
Clean Boating Partnership helps ensure a sustainable
future for the environment and the billion-dollar marine
industry.
