DEP Recognizes Florida's Newest Green Yard

-- Automotive recycler works for cleaner environment --

ORANGE CITY - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today recognized the environmental commitment of M&K Used Auto Parts by designating the facility a Florida Green Yard. M&K is the first facility of Volusia County’s approximately 20 auto salvage yards to complete the comprehensive program designed to protect Florida’s environment.

“As Florida’s 24th Green Yard, M&K Used Auto Parts has established itself as a leader in the industry,” said DEP Central District Director Vivian Garfein. “The facility has taken the initiative to protect the state’s natural resources and waterways by implementing environmentally-friendly practices.”

One of Florida’s largest used-car part inventories, M&K Salvage implemented best management practices in dismantling areas to test, pull and clean categorized parts. Representatives from Volusia County and the automotive industry joined DEP to recognize the auto salvage yard for its accomplishments at the designation ceremony.

In an industry known for environmental challenges, the Florida Green Yards program helps automotive recyclers understand and comply with environmental regulations. Automotive recyclers that achieve the Green Yards designation prevent pollution by demonstrating environmental compliance with more than 35 best management practices ranging from proper container labeling to stormwater management.
