DEP Cautions Against Open Burning During Dry Weather

--Agency following DACS lead, prohibiting open burning during adverse conditions--

TALLAHASSEE – Florida is currently experiencing wildfires, with the potential for conditions to continue due to dry and windy conditions. Florida has experienced very dry conditions during the past year, including drought conditions in the Lake Okeechobee region, the Treasure Coast, and portions of north and northeast Florida.

In response, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ (DACS) Division of Forestry yesterday decided to ban the burning of yard waste due to adverse burning conditions. In support, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is reminding residents that a DEP rule prohibiting open burning, including burning in air curtain incinerators, is also in effect. DEP’s rule against burning is effective until the DACS restrictions are lifted.

For more information on wildfire conditions and open burning restrictions, please contact your local DACS Division of Forestry office, or visit http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/ Exit Disclaimer.
