Monroe Harbour Marina and Boatyard Designated as a Clean Marine Retailer

-Environmental stewardship a top priority for Monroe Harbour Marina and Boatyard-

SANFORD – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating Partnership, today recognized Monroe Harbour Marina and Boatyard as a Clean Marine Retailer. The facility is the first to receive the Clean Marine Retailer designation in Seminole County and the first to receive Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard and Clean Marine Retailer designations in the state.

“DEP is extremely proud that Monroe Harbour Marina and Boatyard in Seminole County is the first marina in the state to achieve all three Clean Marina designations,” said Vivian Garfein, Director of DEP’s Central District. “Florida’s Clean Marinas play an important part in preserving our waterways.”

Located on beautiful Lake Monroe, the marina was built by the City of Sanford in 1967. The marina has 213 wet slips and 157 dry storage racks to accommodate its visitors year-round. To receive a Clean Retailer designation, Monroe Harbour went above and beyond required environmental regulations and adopted safeguards that help keep pollutants out of the water. The marina developed and implemented management plans to promote the use of environmentally-friendly cleaning products, offers recycling receptacles for trash and antifreeze and provided safety training to better enable their staff to respond to emergencies.

“Monroe Harbour Marina is proud on becoming Florida’s first marine facility to achieve Clean Marina, Boatyard and Retail status,” said John Lucarell, Harbour Master of Monroe Harbour Marina and Boatyard. “We will continue our commitment in protecting the environment and support the efforts of Florida’s Clean Marina Program.”

The Clean Boating Partnership is a consortium of industry leaders who contribute time and input to the Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard, Clean Marine Retailer and Clean Boater programs, which DEP administers, to protect Florida’s waterways.

With more than one million registered motorized vessels in Florida, environmental education within marine industries is the first step towards safeguarding the state’s natural resources. The Clean Boating Partnership, which includes the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Marine Industries Association of Florida, Florida Sea Grant Program, United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary, developed the Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard, Clean Marine Retailer and Clean Boater Programs to protect Florida’s waterways. By providing ‘green’ education and alternatives, the Clean Boating Partnership helps ensure a sustainable future for the environment and the billion-dollar marine industry.
