Beat High Gas Costs while Fueling Florida’s Economy
Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the most talked about subjects these days. Another is the high cost
of fuel. With summertime fast approaching and the thoughts of vacations on the minds of many, Floridians
are actually some of the lucky ones. There is so much to do right here that out of state travel isn’t
necessary which means reduced emissions, a savings in fuel consumption and a ready-made vacation all
rolled into one.
Living in Florida means being surrounded by two magnificent oceans with 1,350 miles of coastline and
residing a short distance from one of 700 freshwater springs or 50,000 miles of rivers and streams.
Water based activities alone provide at least a dozen entertaining ways to have fun from swimming,
surfing, skiing, sailing, snorkeling, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, diving, tubing or building
castles in the sand.
Recreational opportunities on dry land are just as plenteous. Hundreds of miles of trails weaving
throughout the state provide hikers, biking enthusiasts, rollerbladers and equestrians with a place to
exercise, get back to nature and see the vast and diverse flora and fauna that is found amongst the lush,
forested woodlands, cypress-kneed swamps, prairie plains and distinctive scrub habitats.
Add to this list museums, archaeological sites, century-old forts, pre-war mansions, prolific garden
settings, and places that tell of Florida’s historical and cultural past and you have the components of
Florida’s 161 state parks and greenways and trails systems. Everything is there; all you have to do is
show up. Conveniently located with entrance fees ranging from zero to less than most movie tickets,
Floridians have choices for vacation holidays that some other state residents can only dream of. For a
real adventure, vacationers could add camping to the get-a-way. Options in state parks range from primitive
to hookups for RV travelers, cabins, lodges and inns, and many accept pets.
For those who view a vacation as a time away from the daily routines of making beds and washing dishes,
Floridians have it made there, as well – and without sacrificing their environmental compassion for
protecting the state’s natural resources. There are more than 140 designated Green Lodges located
throughout Florida, ranging from four room inns to four diamond accommodations. What that means to
Floridians is that these lodging facilities are committed to manage their businesses in a way that is kind
to Florida’s environment and help reduce Florida’s carbon footprint. They have all made beneficial changes
ranging from switching to energy efficient appliances, using pesticide free products, reducing waste or
improving air quality without sacrificing the quality lodging experience.
Tourism puts more than $60 billion into Florida’s economy. There must be a very good reason. This summer,
learn why and at the same time save fuel, have fun and discover Florida.
