Secretary Vinyard, with representatives from the five water management districts, speaks at a press conference Wednesday, August 24, 2011 announcing water management district budget reductions.
Effective and efficient water management is essential to the public, the environment and Florida’s economic health and welfare. The core mission of Florida’s five water management districts is to protect Florida’s water supply, water quality, natural systems and provide flood protection. Over the past several months, DEP has worked collaboratively with the water management districts to review, revise and realign their operations, practices and budgets.
The proposed 2011-2012 water management district budgets are $700 million less than last year, and will bring water management district operations more in line with state agencies and ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent in a prudent and transparent manner. It is important to note that despite these reductions, the districts will continue to invest more than $1 billion in the management and protection of Florida’s water resources during the next fiscal year.
The information below is to inform the public of water management district budget reductions and savings.
