Power plants generate electric
power from another source of
energy

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
coordinates the interagency review and certification for
building and operating power plants, transmission lines and
natural gas pipelines.
DEP’s Siting Coordination Office and Office of General
Counsel provide administrative and legal support for the
certification process. Certification is an all encompassing license for
affected state, regional and local agencies, and includes any regulatory
activity which would be applicable under these agencies regulations for the
facility. Though DEP is responsible for
coordinating the certification process, the Governor and Cabinet
issue siting certifications.
Electric and magnetic fields (EMF) generated by electrical
transmission lines are also regulated by DEP. The Siting Coordination Office reviews
required compliance reports submitted by companies that
construct or operate transmission lines.
The Siting Coordination Office also assists county tax
appraisers in determining eligibility for ad valorem tax
reductions for air or water pollution control equipment.
