The natural environment is the lifeblood of our state's economy; the reason it is so beautiful. The Department of Environmental Protection wants to work with you to protect, conserve and manage Florida's environment and valuable natural resources.  The DEP's South District focuses on issues facing this region and state, ranging from mangroves to hazardous waste.  The South District always welcomes public input.  The District is responsible for the following county areas:  Charlotte, Collier, Highlands, Hendry, Glades, Lee, Monroe.

Program Overview

The District Director and five program administrators have offices at this site.  The main office and its programs are supported by three field offices led by environmental administrators supported by dedicated professional staff for the individual programs.  The Marathon branch office provides permitting and compliance functions for the Florida Keys, and the Sebring office provides similar functionality for Highlands and Hendry counties.  The Biology lab in Punta Gorda collects data and supports the compliance functions of the department.

DEP Meetings, Hearings and Workshops

Governor Crist recently signed into law SB 2188, requiring state agencies to post all public meetings, hearings and workshops to their Web site, with the exception of emergency meetings. Effective July 1, 2009, each agency is to give notice of public meetings, hearings and workshops by publication in the Florida Administrative Weekly and on the agency’s Web site, not less than seven days before the event.
