BROWNFIELDS
In an effort to revitalize existing commercial and
industrial sites that have been abandoned or are underused because of
real or perceived contamination, this program creates financial and
regulatory incentives for voluntary cleanup and redevelopment.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Hazardous wastes are solid wastes which are reactive,
ignitable, corrosive or toxic and are regulated from "cradle-to-grave"
by the Department through its federally delegated Resource Conservation
and Recovery Act (RCRA) program.
POLLUTION PREVENTION
Pollution prevention represents a fundamental change
to more efficient ways of using resources. Shifting emphasis from
pollution control to pollution prevention is an important component of
the Department's mission to protect, conserve and manage Florida's
environment and natural resources.
SOLID WASTE
The solid waste program includes regulation of
landfills, construction and demolition debris disposal facilities,
transfer stations, material recovery facilities, waste tire processors,
and waste-to-energy plants. -
STORAGE TANKS
Storage tanks used to store regulated substances
aboveground or underground are annually inspected by staff from local
county programs under contract with the Department. Department staff
perform inspections as random checks and inspect tanks owned by the
contracted programs. Department staff also provide technical assistance
to local programs, consultants, and the public.
WASTE CLEANUP
This program provides technical assistance and manages
cases involving groundwater or soil contamination which can occur as a
result of accidental spills, or through improper use, management, or
disposal of materials.
