DEP CHOOSES RESTORATION PROJECTS TO IMPROVE ESTUARY
-- Agencies finalize plan to restore estuarine habitats in Tampa Bay --
Tampa – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, today announce the wetland restoration and oyster reef creation projects chosen to help restore, preserve and improve the estuarine habitats near the mouth of Alafia River and adjacent areas of Tampa Bay.
The four projects chosen will address some of the environmental impacts from the 1997 wastewater spill from Mulberry Phosphate’s fertilizer plant in Polk County. The projects will be implemented using civil damages recovered for that spill as part of a 2002 settlement with the company. The projects are identified in the Final Estuarine Restoration Implementation Plan.
