Technical Information
Dragonflies, Dipnets, and GIS
Providing
geographical information systems analysis and database
design.
Introduction
The
Florida Bioassessment Program has a geographic
information system (GIS) support section that focuses on
"WHERE?" things are.
A
geographic information system is a computer-based tool
for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events
that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common
database operations such as query and statistical
analysis with the unique visualization and geographic
analysis benefits offered by maps. These abilities
distinguish GIS from other information systems and make
it valuable for explaining events, predicting outcomes,
and planning strategies.
About
this site
We
hope this site will provide you with information on how
our GIS assists the Bioassessments Program and the entire
Department.

Download Requests
Retrievals from the Statewide Biological Database may be
requested from the Biology Section of the Bureau of
Laboratories. To request a retrieval of biological data, the
following information must be supplied:
- Your name, E-mail address, and telephone number;
- Biological community of interest (macrobenthos, phytoplankton,
periphyton, or macrophytes);
- Geographic area (Florida county) or waterbody;
- Range of dates
- type of data to be included in the retrieval, such as:
- calculated metrics (i.e., taxa richness, Stream Condition Index,
Florida Index);
- taxa lists (with counts if original data were collected as
quantitative);
- percent composition of major taxonomic groups;
- percent composition of functional feeding groups; or
- stations/dates where a particular taxon has occurred.
E-mail Liz Miller (Elizabeth.Miller@dep.state.fl.us)
with your retrieval request. Data will be provided in a tab-delimited
